Love the Munsters theme!Thanks,sounds great.
I love it. When I first saw these I thought they looked like Brian Mays guitars until I heard his were home made. Cool!
Thanks for running through these Sean. I'd love to see the circuits broken down and compared and contrasted but that' another video. Well done!
I would have loved to have won one of these!!!! So awesome!
JCM 800 = The Holy Grail ! 🎸🎵🎶👍
Giver Her The Gun?Sounds good!
This amp needs a Tube Screamer in channel B to cut it.
Depends on what you're trying to cut, I guess.
@@SeanKerns I just tried it with a Tube Screamer.....sounds a LOT better !!!
My understanding is that vintage Fender amps that have a 3 band passive EQ will pass no sound when you turn the EQ controls all the way down. I don’t think that behaviour is something that is only particular to active EQ circuits.
You may well be right. I don’t have any fenders to try it with right now. But I know on a Marshall, which is originally based off the same circuit as most of the fenders, you can turn all the knobs all the way down except for the volume and still get sound out of them.
JCM 800 has that classic "brown tone" that exemplified the 70's and 80's rock scene.
How much were these new? What kind of deals were there?
By a weird coincidence, I actually just saw the receipt for this the other day, and the total was $928. That was including shipping and a hard case which I know I paid extra for. I don't remember what the original price of the guitar was.
Sorry, I didn't rehearse any of the songs at all. I just winged them, with varying degrees of success.
Playing starts a little after 2:00, so it gets louder then.
I used a B6C on my 5420T a great improvement, used a shorter spring in and that got the arm lower. On the Bridge, I used a Vanson Tunamatic with roller saddles, works fine and it lined up over the pickup great as well.
Cool! I actually swapped the tune-o on this one for a ricking bar bridge. It feels more "solid" to me.
Hello Sean, i have a question about this amp. I am trying to repair one for a friend and it has a subtle distortion underneath the clean tone. Like a buzzing fuzz tone about 1/3 the volume of the clean tone. I was thinking about changing out the electrolytic power filtering capacitors. Could you help me find the capacitors I need? I watched your previous vid where you mention that you changed them out.
I got my replacements from Antique Audio Supply (tubesandmore.com) in Arizona. I just looked up the values of the originals, and ordered similar values, though I always go a little bigger if I can't find original values. There are of course other suppliers as well, like Mojotone, Eurotubes, even Amazon.
@@SeanKerns thanks so much for your help. I appreciate it. I will order them. The amp is serial number 3071. It has those square magnet speakers. I checked the speaker impedance and the combined impedance was 7 ohms. I’m gonna test the amp with different speakers also. Do you know anything about the wiring of the extension cab jack? My questions is, does it disconnect the onboard speakers when engaged or combine with them? I have an 8 ohm cab, but I don’t want to take it to a lower load by combining it with the onboard speakers.
@@GoRobo237 Unfortunately, the external jack wasn't available on my British market build, and the internal speaker wiring was missing from the one I bought in the US, so I'm not sure how it wires up. There are a few schematics online for this model. I believe it is looking for an 8 ohm load from two 16 ohm speakers, which is what both of mine have. Neither had original speakers when I got them.
@@GoRobo237 BTW, the square magnet Eminence speakers (code starts with 67) are stock speakers for the amp. Originally they were designed for "Sound City Power Speakers", but they switched to Eminence fairly early on US market amp, because they could ship the amp much cheaper with no speakers, and put the Emis in once they got here.
@@SeanKerns I see, thanks again for your help. I didn’t know that about the speakers. I will say the stock speakers don’t sound that great. Very brittle which doesn’t do a super clean amp like this any favors. Maybe brand new it was a beautiful pristine clean sound. Today it is treble heavy like an ice pick. I went ahead and tried the ext cab plug with an 8 ohm load and it did disengage the internal speakers. So that’s good to know. I didn’t want to take it apart just to take a look at the jack. I tried two vintage 30’s and they sounded way better. More smooth, made the amp sound a lot less noisy too. Seems to roll off quite a bit more treble than the stock speakers.
I just ordered one, I prefer the filter increase treble turning clock wise like a traditional tone control normally does. For those who want it the work the opposite way, like on a pro co rat, couldn't they just switch the wires to the pot?
I can't see why not. You could certainly try it.
@@SeanKerns It's mounted onto a board, not wires to pot so I don't think it can be done.
@@oldmanandguitar Yikes. Maybe not, then.
5Y3 sounds more pleasing to my ears. I use one in my Super Deluxe with EL-34’s.
I liked the 5Y3 better, too.
I had that amp for a few years. Very nice sounding amp, just a little noisy but very cool.
Sounds great, man!
I would love to of heard the clean sounds if you were able to instead of the big boy KERRANNNG RACKET.
Honestly, as a clean amp, it was a little bit dull sounding, but I think its target audience is mostly for people that like Marshall sounds. Either way, though, that amp is gone so I can’t do any more demos of it.
The Pink Floyd delay. Is it a preset? Sounds amazing
No, it wasn’t a preset, but I think I looked up the delay settings from the song and it wasn’t hard to make it work on that pedal.
@@SeanKerns you nailed it. I'll look into that 👍 (late to the Strymon party, but I used one some months ago, and I liked it so much that I bought one. The newer "cooler" ones have less knobs to rapidly tweak and more menu diving.
boring
Really interesting ! Thank you for sharing !
Very cool
I think I like the sound of those mini-hums in that guitar more than I like them in a Les Paul! :-)
That’s a wild one. Thank you for posting!
As a guitar tinkerer myself, I appreciate this! Sounds great!
Saw your fb post on this! Looks terriific with a very interesting set of pups. Sounds GREAT!
What does the sensitivity switch do on the back ???
According to the schematic, it switches in an additional half of a 12AX7 for more gain in the preamp. If that gives you visions of Boogies, it shouldn't. It literally just makes the amp louder and noisier, neither of which it needs.
@@SeanKerns so leave on 1?
@@colinparks619 Unless you need it to be louder, I would. I don't use mine for an overdrive sound, and I don't need it to be louder. I have other amps that can do overdrive without working hard, and if I really want overdrive from a Concord, I have lots of pedals.
@@SeanKerns gotya , I had heard of it being a half power switch
@@SeanKerns deff not louder it's already loooooud, mines a 1968 original run and sounds absolutely unreal
Nobody buys a Marshall for the Clean tone . Its not a Fender or a Hiwatt or a Vox .
A lot of guitarists are looking for the mythical "Marshall overdrive and Fender clean in one amp", and a lot of manufacturers have tried to give it to them, with widely variable levels of success. This was not a success in that regard. But it sure does do the Marshall thing.
Is that a USA Hamer Standard hang’n there?
Not a USA model, no. I have a Korean one and a Chinese one.
Something I found interesting that no one has mentioned in any videos I have seen: THIS IS TRUE BYPASS. Yes!!! I love mine. Was happily surprised there is not the noisy buffer circuit like in a lot of Klon clones.
A great amp. I had a chance to do a gig with one (it may have been an ES version) years ago and the sound was phenomenal. I was a little put off by the EF86 in V1 because of rarity and tendency toward microphonics over the long haul. But overall, after owning most of the first series of Dr Z amps and currently a two knob Mazerati, I think Dr Z makes the best boutique amps I've ever played.
Great Demo, thanks! I have just picked up a 1976 Classic with no footswitch. These original footswitches are not easy to find but are occasionally available on the typical auction sites. The 1976 Classic (and possibly all Classics) came with a a 4 button pedal called “Automixer.” Also a 6 pin plug. I picked one up for $80. It is similar to the 3 button you demo but adds the Tremolo control button which is a fun option. The Peavey website is good for downloading easy to read manuals for the Classic which includes instructions on the footswitches. Your video totally brought it home for me and now having good fun with it! Thanks!!
Josh promised Bill Finnegan that he wouldn't sell a klon copy as long as Bill was selling them. As of today, Bill is kinda sorta maybe possibly still selling them. Nobody, including Josh knows for sure. BUT... Bill doesn't seem to have a problem with klon pedal kits being sold and put together. Thus, the constant marketing by JHS of "It's not a Klon until YOU build it." He is keeping his promise to Bill while still offering a Klon to the MANY people who have been begging JHS for it.
Last I read, Bill will *every now and then* build a Centaur so his neighbor, a single mom, can sell one online to get some extra cash
@@EclipseAtDuskhe seems like a great guy
Something I forgot to mention in the video, there is no battery clip in this. It's externally powered only.
Lots of housewives with ocd in these comments. 😂
Nice! That amp definitely has the finer-gravel sound like a Vox, and sings nicely on the high end. Good match for the SG, which I did not expect.
Verily, it doth rock.
Propane!!!!
Sweet tones
Late to the debate here. Green Beret? Why did you go for a 25w speaker? The power handling seems a little low for this amp.
I didn’t pick the speaker.
@@SeanKerns Great demo. Not much out there about this amp.
Good stuff. It suits ya.
Thanks for the helpful instruction. I just bought a Firefly telecaster-style body with a Bigsby-style vibrato and Filter’Tron looking pickups. (Brand new $199). Thanks to your video I discovered that it has a movable bridge. I never imagined an electric guitar with a moveable bridge.
I so want to build this amp, only 100 watts with four 6CA7 or 7t82A tubes. I think weber still offers a kit?
I only see the 50 watt kit on their site currently. The 100W had KT88's, IIRC.
Yes, you are correct. Looking at the schematic and layout for both, the differences are the transformers, copper cap, and power tubes. I hope to get the 6H50 without tubes, copper cap or transformers, then see about getting the100 watt transformers and copper cap that is shown in the 6H100, as well as different tubes. I cannot decide between 6CA7 or 7581A...😂
@@jamescpht I actually had the 100W version a couple of years ago, and honestly, my recollection is that it didn't sound very different from the 50.
@SeanKerns ah, okay. That is good to know. I assumed making it 100 watts will produce even more headroom. However, it sounds like it may not be necessary. Perhaps a quad of JJ 6V6S will be a better idea.
Would you sell it haha? I just got a sustainor 100a
I just did, actually.
Lonely nights by Bryan Adams! That was unexpected 🙂Great riff!
Now that is a very nice solid guitar nice buy man
This is not 1990’s technology. It is early from the early 1980’s.
Yes, thank you. I misspoke.
Sorry for my arm. I'm a terrible videographer. Just trying to demo the tones.
Did you liked it more with or without the cap? Thanks!
Actually, I ended up going back to the stock setup. Adding the bright cap actually made the amp noisier.
Aw gee sus, too much big boy distortion, how about some tasteful clean sounds, anyone can make a racket like that, possibly a MG DFX 50 watter would give better sounds and have good reliability for a few years where as the Origins tend to end up on electrical engineers benches too often for repairs and mods.
Munsters theme.. a classic.. was that through the Marshall cab? how do you find it cab vs FRFR or direct to interface/house? how well will that 2203 take boost?
It's actually a Carvin Vai Legacy cab, loaded with V30's. The logo has been missing since before I got it. I popped the Marshall logo on because I had an extra, and I hate a vacuum. I personally find the Kemper to feel much more like a "real" amp running the power amp into a guitar cab, than running the line outs with speaker sims to a FRFR or PA or recording interface. It's the difference between a great amp and the recording of a great amp, if that makes sense.
On the boost question, I don't do it a lot, but my experience with running pedals into the Kemper is that it takes them very well.
@@SeanKerns thanks for the reply s.. I like my JCM 800 with an SD-1.. more snarl..
